Notes: "Claude Hope (died 7/14/00 at 93) observed a gangly, lopsided flower growing wild in Costa Rica and thought he might be on to something…known as the Father of Impatiens…Hope began breeding this crop in the 1960's…'there had never been a plant that bloomed to such profusion and color', said George Ball Jr., chairman of the W. Atlee Burpee seed company…He helped found PanAmerican Seed Company…" [E. Nagourney, New York Times Obit., 8/13/00] . The impatiens is now considered the No. 1 bedding plant in America.
