A New Facility to Replace the Old

Gulf Coast Research & Education Center

After more than 75 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Florida and the Tampa Bay area, our research center will move.  The old site has been purchased by the Manatee County School Board, and a new high school has been built.  The new center is located near Balm, Florida (green star in center of map) and is in the final stages of completion.  Ground was broken October 28, 2003, and the facility completed and is scheduled for occupancy February 7, 2005.  Click on the gator for groundbreaking pictures and center updates: See pictures taken January 24, 2005: .  Below is a view of early school construction at the Bradenton site as viewed from the location of the final winter annual bedding plant trial conducted in this location:
Freshly disked fields in the foreground are prepared for use in the last research to be conducted at GCREC - Bradenton (fall 2003), before all the land is transformed into a public school complex.
Flowering bedding plants, such as these verbena pictured above, begin their development for performance evaluation in the last winter trial at GCREC - Brandenton, as a new school rises from the fertile fields once used for research to aide Florida vegetable and flower growers (fall 2003).
